MARRIED / IN A RELATIONSHIP / SINGLE? I have been in a relationship with Marlene for 5 years. Marlene never ran until she met me and now she consistently out paces me for runs over 10k. She is definitely a distance runner and I am quicker at 10k and under.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN PORTLAND? 47 years (all but 7 years due to my career)

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RUNNING / WALKING? I have been running for 26 years. My first race was the “Run Between The States”, a 12k for the dedication of the Glen Jackson Bridge (I205) on May 15, 1983. I had a great time with a 6 minute 58 second pace.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED?I first started running for weight management & then it was fun doing the races with all the other people.

FAVORITE PLACE TO RUN IN PORTLAND? Willamette Blvd

DO YOU PREFER TRAILS OR ROADS? Definitely roads, especially asphalt

WHAT IS YOUR AVERAGE MILE PACE? After running in 180 events and accumulating over 1, 060 event miles since 1983, my average pace is 7 minutes 32 seconds for a mile.

WHAT IS YOUR PR FOR A 5K? My PR for a 5k is 6 minutes 54 seconds for the “Streak Of Independence” on July 4, 1991. I have better PR’s for 8k’s in earlier years. I haven’t run too many 5k’s.

FASTEST MILE? My fastest mile is 6 minute 32 seconds for the first 4 mile leg of the Coors Biathlon on May 27, 1996.
My fastest mile for a standard run is 6 minutes 41 seconds for the “Run With A View” 8k on July 4, 1994.

FAVORITE PRE-RACE FOOD? I don’t eat before a race. The night before I like to keep it light while eating a little red meat.

FAVORITE FOOD? If it’s Italian, I’m there.

ANY HOBBIES BESIDES RUNNING / WALKING? I enjoy landscaping and gardening

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST TERRAPIN EVENTS RACE? My first Terrapin event was the “Volcano Run” 8k on April 5, 1997. I’m not really sure if Terrapin was involved with this race at the time.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE? My favorite is the “Run With A View” which was an 8k

WHY? This was a great 8k along Willamette Blvd with a great view of Portland. The course is flat and very fast for the distance.
Hopefully Terrapin can resurrect this great course!!!!!!!

ANY STRANGE PRE-RACE RITUALS? Not that I can think of.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU ON A FRIDAY / SATURDAY NIGHT? If the weather is nice, I like to have an outside beer at a sidewalk club.

FUN STORY
Last November, Marlene & I were on vacation in Puerto Vallarta. Outside our hotel there were preparations for the “Puerto Vallarta International 5k and Half Marathon”. Even though it was 70 degrees at 8:00 in the morning, we spontaneously decided to join them for the 5k. It was a great run with a great shirt.
